Parks & Rec pauses traditional summer camp for upcoming season amid budget pressures

They made the difficult decision to pause the summer camp for the upcoming season." Commissioners and residents discussed falling enrollment and the program's cost structure; one commissioner noted the program had declining attendance and said it was hard to justify "$4,550,000 dollars for a program that maybe 9, 10 kids are coming to." Commissioners asked staff to explore alternatives such as shifting programming to other existing amenities, exploring partnerships with free local camps and reporting back with estimated enrollment, staffing ratios and cost-recovery options before reinstating the traditional camp.
Staff presented the pause as temporary and said the department will use the year to evaluate options and present updates to the commission.
