David Duke, Fire Chief of the Blue Lake Fire District, told the Public Safety Commission the department responded to 37 calls for service in June, including 21 fires, three traffic collisions and nine medical responses. "We had 37 calls for service," Duke said, and he described the July 4th chip-pile incident near the river as limited to surface embers that the crews extinguished but that could smolder in deeper material.
Duke said the cause of the chip-pile fire remains undetermined and that access is an issue: public works must be contacted to open the locked gate so crews can reach the pile. He recommended temporarily dampening the pile or installing a sprinkler and described one recent excavator effort that reached only surface material; commissioners asked staff to coordinate access and consider signage and first-aid arrangements for large public events.
