The University of Utah Board of Trustees voted to establish an Olympics Center for Societal Impact to research and engage on the social, economic and environmental consequences of hosting Olympic events. Presenters described pillars focused on societal, environmental and economic impacts and said the center aims to coordinate research, student engagement and external partnerships over the years leading to the Games.
John Lim (scientific director) told trustees the university will coordinate with internal partners and external organizations, noting monthly meetings with the organizing committee and engagement with other U.S. research centers. "What we're hoping here is to have a research hub," Lim said, describing plans to involve students in classes and research in the eight years before the Games. Trustees discussed scope—some asked how elite athlete research and student engagement would be incorporated—and presenters clarified the center's research remit and links to operational partners. The board moved and approved the center; presenters said the item will also follow system‑level approvals now required for centers and institutes.
Trustees framed the approval as an early step in a larger Olympic strategy tied to campus legacy planning and student opportunities.
