Board approves $144,421.73 for Monroe High School gym upgrades

Administration requested approval for a Monroe High School gym upgrade at a not-to-exceed cost of $144,421.73 with funding from the general fund and sinking fund. Facilities staff described project components: removal of upper gym bleachers ($49,750), sanding and refinishing of the lower gym floor, installation of a protective floor covering (about $19,171.73), an upper-gym curtain ($35,000), and other items; an additional smaller sanding under the upper-bleacher area was later noted to cost roughly $3,000 and was not in the initial bid. Facilities staff said the work was intended to protect and prolong the floor and to create additional usable space upstairs.

Board members asked whether components could be approved separately and raised concerns about the total cost and future work. Administration said the current motion covers the full recommended package and that larger, more comprehensive renovations (including removing the main-court bleachers) would require major funding mechanisms such as bonds and were not immediate priorities. One board member asked for clearer breakdowns in future materials; administration agreed to provide sinking-fund balances and further detail in board briefs.
