Custer Elementary students tell board how they practice leadership

Three students from Custer Elementary presented to the Monroe Public Schools Board about student leadership programs — student news, student council, classroom jobs and positive peer advocates — and explained how those activities build responsibility and community.
Three students from Custer Elementary described how their school cultivates leadership and community involvement during the board’s April 8 meeting. Serenity Ware, who introduced herself as a student delegate, said leaders “help teams work together” and listed qualities of good leaders including respect, honesty and responsibility. Principal Melissa Bell told the board the presentation was created by students. "This came from their hearts and what they truly feel their leadership roles at Custer are," Bell said.
The students outlined specific programs: Custer Student News, where pupils present to their school; student council, which gives students opportunities to make speeches and represent peers; classroom jobs to teach responsibility; and Positive Peer Advocates (PPA) who support younger students. Superintendent Shaw thanked the delegates and told them they had been “courageous” for speaking. Board members applauded the presentation and took photographs after the presentation.
