Mayor urges quick fixes for flood control, sewer and downtown using $47M redevelopment funds

Mayor Anthony Talarico Jr. opened the workshop by saying the borough needs to move on critical public‑safety infrastructure and proposed using the $47,000,000 redevelopment funds to address four near‑term priorities: repairs to the Wampum spillway, replacement or upgrades to a failing sewer pump station, downtown paving and streetscaping, and townwide road resurfacing. "We do have to do the Wampum Spillway," he said, adding that the projects would come back to the governing body for separate up‑or‑down votes.

Several council members and residents welcomed addressing long‑deferred capital needs but pressed for more detail. One council member called the mayor’s list a "wish list" and said a plan must include costs, timelines and a schedule; the same council member requested placing the municipal‑building question on the November ballot so voters could decide on that large expenditure. The mayor responded that engineers and the redevelopment lawyer will vet trustee agreements and that the administration will present cost estimates before individual votes. The council did not adopt a binding funding resolution at the workshop; the mayor said he will proceed with authorized bond drawdowns consistent with prior council approval and return project proposals for formal consideration.
