Board reviews SEED committee opt-in proposal and presentation on HPV vaccine data
Summary
At a Monroe Public Schools work session, the SEED committee’s recommendation to use an opt-in approach for SEED-related materials drew extended discussion and questions about current curriculum and parental choice; a presenter cited data on HPV vaccination and its potential to prevent many HPV-related cancers.

Monroe Public Schools staff introduced the SEED committee recommendation and explained the district would require an opt-in process for any SEED-related instruction materials, rather than the previous opt-out approach. Staff (S1) said the change would leave the final decision with parents and that materials would come back to the board for formal approval.
Presenter (S4) walked board members through packet graphs showing Michigan and Monroe County vaccination rates and cancer-prevention estimates. "The 9 valent HPV vaccine protects against the 7 high risk HPV types that cause most HPV related cancers," Presenter (S4) told the board, and the packet cites roughly "722 cancer cases attributed to HPV in females and 469 in males could have been prevented." Committee members pressed for clarity about what is currently taught; one board member asked whether any barrier-protection content (IUDs, pills, barrier methods) is currently presented, and staff responded that such items are not being taught under the district’s approved health curriculum.
Board members debated the SEED process and whether adopting the opt-in step becomes a gateway for future materials. Committee member (S2) emphasized parental control: "It's the parent's choice at that point," and several members asked staff to return with materials and a brief informational statement for a workshop before any vote. The board did not take a formal vote at the work session.
