An intruder-detection audit presented April 20 found a faulty latch on a roll-up door at Van Alstyne Middle School that allowed the door to open despite being latched. Chief Jeff Burge reported the finding to the Board of Trustees and described immediate corrective actions taken by district staff.
Burge said staff trained campus personnel, created an action plan to secure the door, and the problematic door was permanently locked while an adjacent emergency exit remains available. The audit is part of a state-mandated annual review of intrusion detection systems at every campus under Texas requirements. The district listed these steps to Safety and Security Committee members and characterized the matter as resolved following the fixes.
The presentation did not identify additional campuses with similar failures. The Board received the report as informational and did not take formal action beyond noting the corrective measures.
