Weslaco ISD honors top-performing campuses, choir and designates October observances

The board recognized Cleckler Held Elementary Choir (Division I trophy and best-in-festival), inducted a coach into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame, announced Margo Elementary’s Purple Star campus designation, and proclaimed October observances including Dyslexia Month and Custodian Appreciation Day.
Trustees used the Sept. 15 meeting to highlight recent campus and staff achievements. The Cleckler Held Elementary Choir returned from the American Classic Choir Competition in San Antonio with a Division I trophy (staff corrected the record that it was the fifth consecutive year) and a best-in-festival award; choir director Gloria Champion and students were recognized.
The board also honored West Loco High School head softball coach Mario Rodriguez for his induction into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame and acknowledged district distinctions from the Texas Education Agency, including a postsecondary readiness distinction for the district and several A/B-rated campuses. The board proclaimed October 2025 as Dyslexia Month, named several awareness days and recognized National GEAR UP Week in the district.
Trustees offered public praise to principals and staff for academic gains and rising campus ratings.
