Hidalgo County official asks Weslaco ISD permission to tap school fire-hydrant line for new Precinct 1 wellness center

Hidalgo County Precinct 1 is building a 30,000-square-foot wellness center adjacent to Northbridge Elementary, and County Commissioner David Fuentes asked the Weslaco ISD board for permission to tap a district fire-hydrant water line to complete a required fire-suppression loop.
Fuentes described the planned facility as a community destination with two full-size gyms, a weight room, batting cages, a golf simulator and classroom space, and said the center could open in February or March, weather permitting. He told trustees the county has identified a point to tap into the hydrant line and would install a valve in a dotted area of the plan that could be shut off to protect the school’s hydrants if an emergency or water-line break occurred. Fuentes said a fire-marshal letter confirms that the school’s waterline serves hydrants only and does not feed internal school plumbing.
Board members acknowledged receipt of the courtesy presentation and the superintendent’s staff had already met with county staff; the county said it will bring a formal request as the project advances. "What we are asking for is the ability to tap into that waterline," Fuentes said, noting the county had left space for a valve and said the placement could be negotiated between the district and the county.
