Deputy Commissioner Brian Clifford told the House Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee that Tennessee’s outdoor sector produced roughly $15,600,000,000 in economic impact in the latest year and that figure reflects a 20% year-over-year increase. "You have something on your desk and I'll call your attention to some of the figures," he told members while highlighting employment and wage gains tied to outdoor recreation.
Clifford said outdoor recreation supports about 114,000 jobs — a roughly 10% increase — and that wages flowing into households totaled about $6,200,000,000 (a 17% increase). He also presented a $1,400,000,000 figure for state tax generation tied primarily to sales tax. Clifford credited cross-agency partnerships, including the Tennessee Outdoor Partnership, for breaking down silos and amplifying the state’s investments in outdoor spaces.
