Planning commission accepts withdrawal of proposed shooting-range zoning change; staff to return with broader rewrite

The Planning Commission accepted an applicant request to withdraw proposed zoning-text and map amendments that would have created a sports shooting range overlay district and rezoned multiple properties adjacent to the Des Plaines River. Chair called for a motion; the chair announced 'Motion by Neil, 2nd by Terry,' and the measure was approved with commissioners voting in favor and no opposition recorded in the transcript.

Rob Cherry, a staff member addressing the commission, said the applicant asked to withdraw so staff and the applicant could prepare a more comprehensive package. "The the issue, with the proposal that we had tabled was related to language in there around, the caliber of rifles being allowed to be fired," Cherry said, and added staff had visited the Halter site and "learned that there was some, bridal range activities happening that may have been in conflict" with the language proposed. Cherry said staff prefers to incorporate that information into a larger zoning change so the commission does not have to revisit piecemeal amendments multiple times.

The amendments under consideration would have affected parcels owned by Conservation L Education L C and the Des Plaines Wetlands Conservancy Inc and referenced lands described as parts of Sections 29, 30 and 32, Township 1 North Range 22 East. With the withdrawal accepted, the item was removed from the agenda, and staff said it will work with the applicant to return at a future meeting with consolidated changes for commission review.
