Commissioners say multi‑agency probe underway after mass fish kill in Cinco/Five‑Mile Bayou

County leaders told the board that a major environmental incident in Cinco/Five‑Mile Bayou killed thousands of fish and crustaceans and produced a strong noxious odor. The board was told multiple agencies — Okaloosa County Water & Sewer, the Department of Health, Florida DEP and Fort Walton Beach public works — are coordinating sampling and analysis to identify the source.

In presenting the incident, the Chair described field conditions and credited county staff for an immediate response: "The odor was like a sulfur type smell; it would burn your nose and eyes," the Chair said, recounting observations and early field results. County water‑and‑sewer staff performed initial oxygen readings and inspected lift stations in the area; additional laboratory tests were expected in the following days. Commissioners said they would keep the public informed and that staff would continue to coordinate tests and possible mitigation steps while investigations proceed.
