Council asks state traffic engineer to study Old Airport Road–Highway 25 left-turn safety

Staff told council the Old Airport Road and Highway 25 left-turn movement has a concerning accident history and that the town has asked the state Division Traffic Engineer to review signal timing and consider a dedicated green arrow for left turns during busy periods.
"You know, we had the accident history with the flashing yellow and very limited solid green turn movement, green arrow movement," Staff member said, noting adjustments to timing had reduced some conflicts but that near misses remain common. Council asked the police department to compile additional crash and traffic data for submission to the state engineer; staff said environmental or signal changes may be recommended based on those data.
Council members and a meeting participant described many close calls at the intersection. Staff said some limited solid-green movement during low-traffic hours might remain acceptable, but that a solid dedicated left-turn during busier times could improve safety. No formal traffic-control order was adopted at this meeting; staff will continue data collection and follow up with the Division Traffic Engineer.
