Residents press council on chronic Douglas Drive flooding and ask about recreation staff protocol

During the public comment period Sheffield residents raised two distinct concerns: chronic flooding at properties on Douglas Drive and a protocol question about how council members should interact with recreation department staff.

A resident who identified himself in discussion as Greg described repeated flooding at an address on Douglas (identified during the meeting as 200 Ace Douglas), saying the problem has persisted since 2021 and has caused damage to a home. He described out‑of‑pocket expenses to repair lawn mowers and flooring and asked the city to follow up. The mayor and staff acknowledged the issue and agreed to inspect the site; staff said the Sheffield365 road crew will provide broader coverage of problem corridors but that long‑term remedies require mapping, prioritization and funding.

Cassandra Scooper spoke during public comment about an incident involving her son at a recreation facility and asked about appropriate protocol when a council member is asked to intervene. A council member who had been asked to address the situation said she was requested by an employee to get the new worker’s attention; the mayor advised that personnel concerns are typically handled by supervisors and suggested the complainant provide texts or details so staff can follow up.

Council thanked volunteers for recent community events, including a back‑to‑school distribution and Riverfront Park activities; a council member highlighted that volunteers gave away more than 86 backpacks at a recent event.
