Fletcher staff told the Town Council the town will seek short-term financing to buy a new garbage truck and will replace a street sweeper that was totaled in a crash.
"The amount on the garbage truck is the budget memo will be 400,000," Staff member said during the meeting, noting the town plans to apply for loan proceeds and repay over three to four years. He said the financing approach avoids the additional approvals required for longer-term borrowing.
Staff described the street sweeper replacement as a separate budget amendment. "So the quote on that came in at, 235,000," Staff member said, adding that the town received roughly $40,000 in insurance proceeds for the totaled vehicle. The replacement would be funded with a mix of the insurance payout and town fund balance, with procurement to follow state purchasing and competitive-bid options, including piggyback contracts or state contracts.
Council members asked whether contracting out street sweeping had been considered; staff said the closest vendor was several hours away and that long-term contracting could be less economical than owning the equipment. The council agreed to place both capital items on the consent agenda for approval at the next meeting.
The council did not vote on the purchases at the session; staff said financing details and exact contract language will be brought back as part of the consent or regular agenda next week.
