Sheriff's office seeks formal designation as ordinance bureau for two county ordinances

Jeff Fox of the sheriff's office told the council that two county ordinances (false alarm and animal control) currently direct violators to the sheriff's office to pay fines and that formalizing the sheriff's office as an ordinance bureau would bring those two ordinances into the state electronic citation system and standardize processing with other counties. "We simply want the 2 ordinances that the sheriff's office are impacted by to follow that same procedure," Fox said, explaining that the state's court technology rules require the council to establish the sheriff's office as an ordinance bureau to use the electronic system.
Councilors queried whether the original ordinances were passed by the commissioners and whether the commissioners or council should modify them; legal staff had advised that because the change affects revenue collection, the council should consider the ordinance. Jeff Fox said the change is largely administrative and would not alter how payments are ultimately managed by the prosecutor's office if a violation is disputed.
