Rolling Meadows board weighs switching to National Testing Network for police/fire exams

The City of Rolling Meadows Board of Fire & Police Commissioners on Feb. 9 discussed changing the police and fire hiring and promotional testing process and asked the City Attorney for a written recommendation. Chairman Tom Callard said the attorney had not yet finalized a recommendation but expected to deliver it later in the week; if that happens the Commission could begin a new process in May.
Deputy Police Chief Matt Weiglein told commissioners he is collecting options from several services that could handle promotional testing and will present those options to the Commission. Commissioners discussed National Testing Network (NTN), noting NTN conducts online, live-administered testing and charges a per-process fee of $650. Commissioner Mary Sheahen recommended continuing to use Solvig for psychological exams, which Solvig conducts in person; Sgt. Mike Katsenios was asked to contact NTN to request clarification about its psychological-exam format and the number of professionals who prepare reports. Commissioner Dave Walter asked to review NTN's psychological-exam format to make an accurate comparison with Solvig.
Why it matters: the Police Department's eligibility list expires in May, and commissioners said timing the vendor change to that expiration would avoid gaps in hiring. The board discussed using online, one-way interviews to screen candidates before Commission interviews and reserving dates in mid-May for possible interviews.
