Local retailer urges Dunsmuir to permit on-site cannabis consumption

Alan Magana, owner of Al's Depot and Emporium at 4116 Pine Street, used the meeting’s public‑comment period to press the council and planning commission to take a formal next step on allowing on‑site cannabis consumption in town.

Magana said he has received written correspondence from the Department of Cannabis Control confirming that ‘‘local jurisdiction is the prevailing authority on whether a licensed cannabis business may operate an on‑site cannabis consumption area’’ and that no additional state approvals are required beyond local authorization. He told the bodies his business has already planned ventilation, security and separate consumption spaces and asked the city ‘‘to schedule the next formal step, whether that is a planning commission recommendation, a zoning amendment, or a conditional‑use permit hearing so that we can finally move forward…into action.’'

Magana framed the request as both economic and public‑safety oriented, describing Dunsmuir as ‘‘a tourism town’’ and arguing that clear local rules would support safe, regulated hospitality. He asked for a ‘‘clear, timely, and fair process that follows the law as written, not imagined.’'

No formal action on cannabis rules occurred at the meeting; staff and officials acknowledged ongoing work on cannabis policy during the later workshop discussion and said staff would follow up as appropriate.
