The Village of Shabbona Board of Trustees approved a package of employee-handbook updates that add bereavement, jury-duty, return-to-work, drug-free workplace and a weapon-free workplace policy. During discussion one trustee said they did not support the weapon-free workplace policy and asked whether the village’s insurer would require it; the chairman said the policy was recommended and the package was moved and approved.
The clerk led the roll call on the resolution; recorded votes included at least one 'No' (Helen Welsh) with other trustees voting to approve the resolution. A trustee asked staff to confirm whether the insurance company would condition coverage on the policy; the board directed staff to double-check statute and insurance guidance. The resolution was approved and will be incorporated into the employee handbook.
Trustees also discussed the intent behind the policies and whether non-adoption would put the village at risk for insurance issues. The board accepted the package as presented and asked staff to clarify insurer recommendations and any statutory requirements before implementation.
