The council publicly commended fire and rescue personnel for their response to multiple river rescues during this year’s Tour de Cola. Captain Atkins described an unusually difficult day when two boats, multiple crews and extended on-water operations pulled “about 30” people from the river and provided urgent care for those in distress; the council presented letters of commendation to several firefighters.
“Last count that I heard, there were 30 people that they pulled out of the river, of which probably 10 were in significant distress and in serious need of help,” Captain Atkins said as he described the day’s events. Council members singled out Lieutenant Rex Ableton, Josh Kaiser, Travis Lilly and Chris Carter for recognition; firefighter Kyle Robble was noted as absent and will be acknowledged separately.
