Council OKs five-year lease for fire department training facility at 1670 S. Valley Drive

The Las Cruces City Council on Aug. 3 voted to authorize a new five-year lease for a fire-department training facility at 1670 South Valley Drive.
Virginia Barela, buyer II in Financial Services, told the council the first year of the renewed five-year lease beginning July 1, 2026, will be for $192,000; years 2 and 3 at $216,000 annually; and years 4 and 5 at $240,000 annually. The council was told the facility is about 22,000 square feet on roughly five acres and that the space will support training and logistics for the fire department.
Deputy Chief Tibor Coaches said the landlord made improvements during earlier leases (enclosing one bay and adding warehouse/shop space) and that the department plans some additional temperature-control and temporary measures rather than increasing rent. Councilors asked whether an early-termination clause exists; Financial Services said staff would pull the specific lease clause and provide details later. Councilor Harris confirmed funding will come from the general fund.
The resolution authorizing the lease (Resolution 27-020) was moved, seconded and approved on a roll-call voice vote with all members present voting yes.
