Trustees debate $72,000 sidewalk estimate and new 5-foot ordinance; MFT resolution tabled

Trustees spent substantial time reviewing an engineer's sidewalk estimates and the recently adopted sidewalk ordinance that calls for 5-foot sidewalks in new construction. One trustee warned that $72,000 is a large expense to take on in one year and urged the infrastructure committee to re-evaluate priorities.
"Seems like a lot of money to spend in 1 year on sidewalks. $72,000 if the estimate is correct," a committee member said during the estimate review. Trustees agreed to prioritize an emergency repair near Olson's house and approved Public Works doing immediate patches there; they then voted to table the IDOT/MFT resolution until the board can produce a final dollar amount for the application.
Members also discussed whether the recently passed 5-foot-wide standard applied to work already estimated at narrower widths, ADA turning-point requirements and whether the ordinance should be amended or revisited by the infrastructure committee before pursuing larger sidewalk projects.
