Board honors South El Monte football team after CIF Division 14 title, coach Gallardo to return

The El Monte Union High School District Board of Trustees recognized South El Monte High School's football team for winning the 2025 CIF Southern Section Division 14 championship and reaching the state regional final.
Principal Jorge Morales and coach Frank Gallardo addressed the board about the season and the program's community support. Morales recounted the playoff run and thanked assistant principals and athletic staff for travel logistics and student support. Coach Gallardo—who had briefly retired—said he would return next season and thanked parents and staff for their patience: "I wanna thank my coaching staff... I'd like to thank, of course, the boys for putting up with my demands and realizing that football is a very physical tough sport," he told the board.
Trustees noted field conditions (the school's field, nicknamed "The Swamp," had serious drainage issues) and thanked district staff for improvements that allowed CIF to host playoff games. The board presented recognition certificates to coaches and players and arranged photos with trustees and administration. No fiscal or policy decisions accompanied the recognitions.
Trustees also encouraged continued investment in athletics' supports and emphasized the educational value of extracurricular activities.
