Council opens public hearing on annexing 15 acres near Microsoft; final vote set for Aug. 17

The council held a public hearing on a proposed annexation of roughly 15 acres adjacent to Microsoft development and introduced an ordinance that cannot be adopted tonight.
Bert Cook, executive director of the La Porte Economic Advancement Partnership, explained the parcel sits immediately west of the Microsoft Phase 1 parcel and that the city and Microsoft have included the parcel in site plans as a buffer between industrial development and nearby residences. Cook told council the annexation will return to them on Aug. 17 after Plan Commission review.
Bill Nelson, attorney for La Porte Assembly of God, said the church decided to sell a 15-acre parcel it had held for decades and described the sale as "super voluntary," emphasizing the church's internal vote and membership approval. Nelson said the proposed annexation and zoning change to M-1 light industrial is a mechanical step so the larger assemblage of Microsoft-owned parcels can have consistent zoning.
The council closed the public hearing after no members of the public requested to speak and directed that a required fiscal plan be prepared and brought before the council prior to final passage. The ordinance and related fiscal plan will return to the council on Aug. 17, 2026.
