LCAP midyear update: mixed academic metrics, trustees debate focus on A–G and math

Dr. Violeta Ruiz presented the district’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) midyear update, explaining the five LCAP goals, associated metrics and midyear results. She said the LCAP is a three-year plan that outlines goals, actions and expenditures to support student outcomes and that the district is in year two of the current plan.
Dr. Ruiz reviewed sample metrics across several goals: misassigned teachers decreased to 2 (target 0), fully credentialed teachers are at or near 100%, and the district reports implementation of state standards across subjects. She noted the a–g completion rate baseline was 49% with a three‑year goal of 55%, and the final a–g completion for the most recent year was 43.7%. CTE pathway completion was 13.3% (goal 25.4%). For college-prep testing and AP performance she cited an AP pass rate of 68.5% for the most recent year. On statewide science assessments, she cautioned that comparisons are difficult because testing grades and instruments have shifted, which complicates year-over-year interpretation.
Trustees used the LCAP discussion to press on priorities. Trustee Nguyen and Trustee Padilla emphasized the board’s long-standing focus on math, while Trustee Galaviz and Dr. Guzman cautioned against concentrating solely on math at the expense of A–G completion and English/literacy. Trustee Padilla described historical efforts to standardize common assessments and power standards and said that building common systems in one content area allowed the district to scale other efforts later.
Dr. Ruiz outlined next steps: winter/spring surveys and focus groups in January–February, drafting of the updated LCAP in March–May, submission for pre-review and an adoption timeline targeting June 2026. Trustees asked staff to continue sharing context and interim metrics so they can assess whether strategies are moving the district toward its three-year goals.
