Planning staff presented an ordinance amendment to allow accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on duplexes and three-family properties and to update related implementation language to align with expected state requirements. The ADU amendment keeps the 800-square-foot size limit and clarifies that ADUs remain accessory to a principal dwelling unit.
One resident described being partway through a project and asked the council to accelerate approvals; planning staff said state implementation was delayed and the town adopted the changes early to help residents caught in limbo. Councilors raised questions about parking, aesthetics and private roads; staff said state law removes some local controls (including owner-occupancy requirements) and clarified parking and appeals language as part of the package. The council voted to adopt the ADU amendments.
