San Pasqual principal credits rising AP participation and peer tutoring for gains; CAST pass rate flagged for growth

Corey Gregory, principal of San Pasqual High School, presented the school's annual update, telling trustees enrollment has hovered around 1,850 and that the site has seen modest growth in a–through–c rates and the college-and-career index. He credited district support for paying AP exam fees and targeted counseling and CTE practices that prioritize underclassmen for pathway starters to increase completer rates.
"We've made some real good growth over the last few years in the college and career index," Gregory said, and noted that AP participation climbed past the 700-student threshold. He reported a pass rate of 62.64% among AP students scoring 3 or higher on an AP exam, and said district funding of AP tests contributed to increased participation and pass rates.
Gregory discussed academic-support programs: a 0-period paid peer-tutor math program on campus draws 65–70 students some mornings and recorded more than 1,800 sign-ins in 2024–25 for 0-period sessions. He told trustees that 44% of math 1 students attended at least one 0-period session last year and that remediation helped many students move from failing to passing a–through–c grades.
On science assessment, Gregory reported a 23% met-or-exceeded standard rate on the CAST science test and discussed plans to increase the number of students taking a third or fourth year of science to boost those results.
Trustees asked clarifying questions about demographic reporting categories, use of CTE credits to meet science requirements and the district's use of practice-assessment vendors; staff provided technical clarifications on California Dashboard definitions and assessment vendors.
What happens next: Principal Gregory and district staff will continue site-level efforts to expand CTE completer rates, encourage AP participation and refine practice testing and interventions for math and science.
