Board unanimously approves Altus Schools North County five-year charter renewal
Summary
After a staff recommendation and a 10-minute petitioner presentation, the Escondido Union High School District board unanimously approved the Altus Schools North County charter renewal for a five-year term beginning July 1, 2026.
District staff recommended the five-year renewal of Altus (Alta) Schools North County's charter after reviewing academic performance, alternative metrics and fiscal and legal compliance. Assistant Superintendent Martin Casas presented the staff report and recommended approval of the petition for the requested 07/01/2026–06/30/2031 term.
Wade Ashbrenner, lead petitioner for Alta Schools North County, thanked district leadership and urged the board to vote yes. "I'd like to thank doctor Casas, superintendent Peterson, and the rest of the leadership team here at EUHSD... I would urge you to vote yes this evening," Ashbrenner said.
With no public commenters on the charter renewal hearing, Trustee [motioner] moved to approve resolution R2025-2026/12 to grant the five-year renewal; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously with student and trustee votes recorded.
What the vote means: Alta/Altus Schools North County will continue operating under district authorization through 06/30/2031 under the terms presented in the renewal petition and as reviewed by district staff.
