County authorizes Prince Frederick Main Street application and letter of support

The Board of County Commissioners authorized county staff to submit an application to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development to designate Prince Frederick’s historic Main Street Corridor as a Main Street Maryland 'connected community.'
Sheba Smith, deputy director of Economic Development, explained the designation would provide technical assistance, training and priority consideration for certain DHCD funding programs. The proposed corridor covers roughly Duke Street to Church Street and includes about 40 businesses in the Prince Frederick town center. "If selected, Prince Frederick would receive technical assistance, training, networking opportunities, and priority consideration for certain DHCD funding programs," Smith said.
Staff recommended the county sign the required letter of support and administer the program initially with existing staff and previously budgeted beautification and events resources; future staffing or project requests would go through the normal budget process. Commissioners voted to authorize submission and to execute the letter of support by voice vote.
The application deadline was noted as Aug. 7; commissioners praised recent Main Street improvements and expressed support for further revitalization.
