Committee approves sheriff-supplement increase after deferral attempt fails

The committee approved resolution 20 26 21 50 to adjust compensation for the sheriff’s office supplement, a measure sponsors said is intended to align pay with peer constitutional officers and to help attract and retain leadership. Councilmember Huffman, sponsor of the resolution, said the sheriff’s office oversees roughly 1,400 employees and a $150 million budget and that the current supplement lags peers.
Members questioned timing and requested comparative data; Shannon Hall, Metro HR director, said state law sets minimums for constitutional officers and local legislative bodies may supplement pay. Huffman clarified the resolution did not appropriate new money and would be conditioned on sufficient funds being available within the existing sheriff’s budget. A motion to defer the matter one meeting failed on a voice vote; the committee then approved the resolution. Councilmembers asked staff to include the matter in the next elected-official compensation study and to provide supporting analysis.
