Dixon engineer highlights national pedestrian fatalities, local mapping during safety month presentation

Brandon Rodriguez, the city’s senior civil engineer, presented October as National Pedestrian Safety Month and recounted national and local crash data at the Transportation Advisory Commission meeting on Oct. 16. "October is National Pedestrian Safety Month," Rodriguez said, and he noted national figures: "in 2022, there were 7,522 pedestrians killed," and that 78 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur in the dark.
Rodriguez summarized additional national findings — a 2022 estimate of 67,336 pedestrians injured (an 11 percent increase from the prior year), alcohol was involved in 48 percent of the fatal crashes discussed, and nearly 24 percent of pedestrian fatalities in 2022 were hit-and-run incidents. He also presented city-specific data from UC Berkeley’s transportation injury mapping showing nine recorded incidents in Dixon between Jan. 1, 2020 and March 31, 2024. Rodriguez emphasized slower speeds and increased driver awareness during shorter daylight hours as practical risk-reduction steps for the community.
