Comal County approves Phase 2 alignment for West Connector; staff to update major thoroughfare plan

The Comal County commissioners voted to approve Phase 2 of the West Connector study and to direct the county engineer to update the county major thoroughfare plan to reflect the alignment.
Luke Reed of Pape Dawson Engineers told commissioners the West Connector is projected to carry large traffic volumes by mid-century: "it's projected to carry up to 32,000 vehicles by 2050 on that South segment, and 26,000 vehicles on the Northern segment." Staff recommended a 250-foot right-of-way for the northern portion (SH 46 to 2722) to preserve corridor options and to minimize floodplain impacts, and noted coordination with TxDOT on SH 46 studies and a planned City of New Braunfels Planning & Zoning presentation on Aug. 5.
County staff emphasized the major thoroughfare plan is a planning tool (Order 107, adopted 2004) used when land is replatted or dedicated and that adopting the alignment now preserves future options rather than obligating immediate construction. Commissioner Leacock moved approval; Commissioner Webb seconded and the motion passed.
