Committee moves bill requiring residential elevator inspections to finance

The Commerce and Labor Committee voted unanimously to send Senate Bill 21‑50 to the finance committee after the sponsor said the measure would require a final inspection by the state chief elevator inspector for new residential elevator installations to improve safety.
Senator Wally, the bill sponsor, told the committee SB 21‑50 would require new elevator installations in private residences to receive a final inspection from the state's chief elevator inspector. “This bill would just require new installations of elevators in private residences to receive a final inspection from the state's chief elevator inspector,” the sponsor said.
Vice Chair Taylor seconded the motion and the clerk took a roll call. The committee recorded nine ayes and the measure was reported to the finance committee for further consideration. The sponsor said the change would mirror existing commercial-elevator inspections and “put residential elevators into the same posture” to improve safety.
The bill drew no amendments at the hearing. Committee members asked procedural questions but did not press for changes; the minutes record the committee’s decision to advance the measure for fiscal scrutiny in finance. The vote was taken by roll and recorded aloud by the clerk.
