The Town Council tabled Resolution 2026-41 on Aug. 4 following extended debate focused on whether language in the measure effectively endorses an outside lawsuit brought by the Southern Poverty Law Center against the school board.
One public commenter told the council to "read section 3 of this resolution closely" and asked whether the town should take a side when it may later serve as a neutral decision-maker on related land-use matters. Several council members echoed that concern. "If it is in fact about...support for the enforcement of Florida Sunshine, I still don't know what it does," the presiding official said as members questioned the need for a separate resolution on a law elected officials already swear to uphold.
Councilmembers also reported new information from a court hearing held that day; the town attorney briefed the council on recent developments and advised that several counts had been denied while the case will continue to trial on Oct. 11. Given those new facts and lingering wording questions, a motion to table the resolution was made and adopted so the council could review the hearing materials and let attorneys provide formal advice at a later meeting.
