The Orange County Public Safety Committee approved acceptance of two Hazardous Materials Targeted Grant Program awards on April 22. The FY2023 award is $141,200 and the FY2024 award is $52,342; both are administered through New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's State Homeland Security Grant Program (SHSP). The committee record states the performance period is 4/1/2026' 8/31/2027 for the awards and that funds will be used for equipment, training, exercises and planning for county fire services and HazMat response teams.
Deputy Commissioner Vini Tankasali said the Orange County HazMat Team is "a volunteer team comprised of members throughout the county from different fire departments who are highly skilled," and noted the grant is distributed across four regions including Sullivan, Ulster and Rockland counties. Officials said the State is catching up from COVID-era disbursements and that funding levels differ between years; the two awards total $193,542 when combined but were presented as separate FY2023 and FY2024 grants in committee.
