Public Works reports on court-timers delay, PG&E light dispute, mulch push for SB 1383 and shade structure delay

Public Works Director Lauren Coteau updated the commission on several maintenance projects. She said the tennis/pickleball courts look finished but cannot open until timers are installed and a final walkthrough with the contractor; the contractor has 100 days to complete work and staff hopes the courts will open before Nov. 5.

On field lighting, Coteau said the PG&E-funded conversion for one ballfield was completed at no cost to the city but the city and contractor disagree about whether the lights are projecting adequate ground-level illumination. "It was escalated to their management," she said, and staff will schedule a meeting with contractor management to discuss options such as adding heads or changing fixtures.

Coteau also described a citywide mulch distribution program to comply with SB 1383 organics procurement requirements and said turf renovations and fertilizing are underway at parks. Finally, she reported that shade-structure posts arrived in the wrong color and the contractor is correcting the order, delaying installation by a few weeks. Commissioners and the public followed up with questions about technical lighting standards, sand/fill policy for fields and whether special meetings could be called to resolve urgent issues.

Next steps: staff will meet with contractor management on the lighting dispute, post court-opening updates on the city website, and continue SB 1383 compliance tasks.
