Resident asks whether new courts will permanently accommodate pickleball; city says nets will remain removable

Tim Smith told commissioners he was pleased with the new courts but asked whether the city had considered painting dedicated pickleball courts or if it was too late to retrofit the new surface. “The lines and things are really difficult to understand, especially for beginners,” he said.
Public Works staff answered that courts were striped to add pickleball without removing tennis capacity, and that pickleball nets are removable so courts can revert to tennis for tournaments. Director Lauren Coteau said dedicated pickleball courts are planned long-term for Homestead Park, but the compromise preserves existing tennis court capacity and adds pickleball playability in the near term.
Staff also said that final opening depends on installation of timers and a contractor walk-through; the contractor has a 100-day period to finish the work and staff expects the courts may open before Nov. 5. No formal vote or policy change was taken at this meeting.
