State Board to hold first TISA accountability hearings; virtual schools included

The State Board of Education told the Senate committee it will conduct accountability hearings later in March for districts and charter operators with schools graded F for two consecutive years, including some virtual schools.
"This is related to the TISA legislation that passed several years ago, but this will be the first time that a subset of our board met board will be coming together to hold hearings for districts and charter operators who have schools that have been graded an F for 2 years in a row," Sarah Morrison said, noting the hearings will take place in Nashville.
When senators asked whether virtual schools are included, Morrison said yes and identified four districts that will be called because of virtual schools scoring F for two years. She explained required attendees at district hearings include the director of schools, local board chair, director of academics and director of finance under board rules.
Committee members questioned whether the 60‑ to 75‑minute hearing slots could cover districts with many schools; Morrison said the board will review the process after the first year and may propose edits. The exchange did not change the hearing plan but highlighted practical concerns about time, pre‑hearing submissions and question focus.
