University of Memphis cites $400M backlog in deferred maintenance, credits safety funding for crime reduction

"As a result of those investments in our campus, our crime has declined significantly over the past 2 years, more than 60% decline," he said.
Hargrave also described deferred maintenance on the campus totaling more than $400,000,000 and noted that several buildings will require replacement in the next two to three years unless the university secures additional capital funding. He said the university is pursuing P3s and energy‑savings partnerships and requested consideration of projects not included in the governor's budget. The committee moved the University of Memphis budget to finance with a positive recommendation.
