Commission agrees to future discussion on 'Place for Everyone' after budget amid concerns over a controversial video

Commissioners agreed to add a future agenda item, to take place after the budget process, to discuss the city’s Place for Everyone efforts and whether the program is meeting defined effectiveness metrics. The item follows a privately funded public meeting attended by some commissioners and the appearance of an online video that used images of Baltimore to criticize housing spending.

Commissioner Sellers condemned the video and its use of out‑of‑jurisdiction imagery, saying it unfairly painted another city in a negative light and carried racial undertones. "I refuse to see our community use a fellow NLC member city… to create a boogeyman lore," the commissioner said, and called on participants to apologize to affected partners. Other commissioners agreed to pursue a focused discussion on outcomes, metrics, and service-provider engagement, and asked staff to place a high-level discussion item on a future agenda after the budget process.

Several commissioners emphasized that the discussion should define what “effectiveness” means, bring service providers into the conversation, and avoid re-litigating prior disputes. The commission asked staff to coordinate next steps and to schedule a public discussion following the fiscal work this fall.
