Committee debates townwide 25 mph option versus street-by-street traffic calming
Summary
Members and staff discussed options for lowering speeds: a townwide 25 mph opt-in (as another town did) versus targeted street-by-street reductions, noting enforcement differences between advisory 'thickly settled' signage and regulatory safety zones that require engineering studies.

Staff told the committee there are multiple technical paths to lower speeds, including a townwide 25 mph opt-in or targeted 25 mph postings on selected streets. "If we are to do a town wide reduction, you know, does the town really want town wide 25 mile an hour speed limit?" staff said, describing several options and urging police input because enforcement responsibility and methods differ between advisory and regulatory designs.
Committee members raised enforcement concerns for advisory signage and described how regulatory safety zones require traffic engineering and allow police enforcement. The discussion covered the visual differences between "thickly settled" advisory signs and enforceable white speed-limit signs and the confusion created where both appear close together. The committee agreed to bring enforcement and design questions to the August 5 select board workshop to clarify roles and next steps.
