Resident urges more sharrows and low-cost markings to help bicyclists

Scott Zenke, a Doan Road resident, told the Transportation & Bikeway Committee that paint and stencils could quickly expand bike guidance across town. "Suggestion at least over a year ago is to put additional sharrows on our streets," he said, noting that Main Street and several connector roads still lack sharrow markings.
Committee members and staff agreed low-cost pavement markings are a practical near-term step. Members said sharrows work best where shoulders are narrow and where a clear lane-right-of-way for bicyclists can be marked; staff noted that paint and edge-line treatments are inexpensive and can reduce speeds by a few miles per hour in some settings. The committee asked staff to identify high-priority stretches (Main Street, Skake it approaches and Rock Harbor) where markings could be trialed and to include potential paint work in upcoming maintenance or grant plans.
