City plans encampment cleanup and enhanced patrols; contractors to assess specialized removal in September

City staff told the council they have begun flagging discarded and abandoned items at the riverfront encampment, have engaged a contractor for removal and plan a more extensive, specialized cleanup likely in September.
"For that, we'll leaning on the professionals, and that answer will come to us through assessment of what our professionals, you know, the contractors, tell us," staff said when asked about handling larger debris and hazardous materials. Parks and Recreation will continue daily trash collection and provide garbage bags, and on‑site cameras remain active to improve situational awareness.
Staff also said Charlottesville Police Department increased patrols following recent incidents at the encampment and that the enhanced public‑safety presence will likely continue through the closure. Staff emphasized that safety plans will cover both individuals who are unsheltered and nearby businesses and trail users.
