Tree Board reports MDNR‑funded plantings; butterfly garden, Monarch Watch proposal advanced

Nancy Thill read the Tree Board and Garden Club minutes, reporting that 33% of the Garden Club membership volunteered to assist with spring plantings and that under an MDNR grant five trees were planted in the park Sept. 25 by Sawyer Garden (a Black Gum, two Ironwood, a Dogwood and a Sugar Maple). Metal fencing was installed to protect the new trees from deer.
Thill described discussions with Pizzo Gardens (Beth) and Mike Mumper about a butterfly garden, including herbicide treatment completed in August and an estimated seeding and planting window in mid‑November using traditional broadcast methods. She said the Michiana Women's Club supported pursuing Monarch Watch certification and involving the village Day Camp. Thill also proposed a pergola at the park entrance subject to available funding.
Arbor Day was observed Oct. 5; Anne Blasko officiated and Rima Binder, president of the Board of the Botanical Gardens, participated in the dedication proclamation read by Tim McCarthy. Scouts provided color guard honors.
