Officials highlight TVA Clinch River SMR permit and $400M DOE grant

State officials briefed the Senate Energy, Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee on progress at the TVA Clinch River site and related federal support. Commissioner David Salyers said TVA submitted a construction permit application for the Clinch River small modular reactor to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission last May and that the NRC’s project determination is expected back to TVA by December 2026.
Salyers also noted a major federal commitment: “In early December, Tennessee was, really happy to learn that the US Department of Energy awarded a 400,000,000, generation 3 plus, small modular reactor grant to TVA for the Clinch River small modular reactor,” he said. He added that the original federal funding opportunity had been up to $800 million and that TVA accepted a $400 million award with a required cost-share, which included state contributions. The commissioner framed the federal support as instrumental to accelerating permitting and deployment timelines.
