Board approves Cognia climate survey after discussion of 5Essentials response rates

The Carlinville CUSD 1 Board voted Oct. 14 to adopt the Cognia climate survey for the 2025–2026 school year after a district presentation explaining survey options.
Dr. Becky Schuchman told trustees that the state-administered 5Essentials survey requires a high response rate to produce usable results and that the district has sometimes struggled to meet that threshold. "In the past, we have used Cognia and were very happy with the results. Cognia provides us the results regardless of the response rate, which helps us as a district to improve our climate and also assists us in obtaining accreditation," Schuchman said.
Following a motion by Maya Reid and a second by Kyle Bradley, the board approved the Cognia contract on a 6-0 roll-call vote (Seth Roberts absent). The board noted the survey results will inform district climate work and accreditation-related reviews.
