District spotlights transportation operations; longtime employee Danita Suhling honored

Carlinville CUSD 1 trustees opened their Oct. 14 meeting at the district bus garage with a presentation from Pat Drew, Assistant Superintendent of Operations & Alternative Education, on the district's transportation operations.
"The number of miles traveled last year was 206,395, we cover from county line to county line," Drew told the board, describing the scope of routes. He said morning ridership totals 551 students and afternoon ridership is 747. Drew also reported the district employs nine full-time bus drivers, three full-time van drivers, five substitute drivers and three retired drivers who still sub. He noted current fuel prices averaged approximately $3.06 per gallon for diesel and $2.81 for gasoline.
Drew used the garage setting to recognize Danita Suhling, a member of the transportation staff, for 28 years of service. He described Suhling as "the heart of the bus garage," saying parents frequently relied on her for dependable answers. The board accepted her retirement effective Oct. 31, 2025 as part of a unanimous set of personnel actions.
The presentation also flagged a forthcoming replacement plan for maintenance vehicles and routine safety work such as helmet reconditioning and inspections that factor into the district's maintenance budgets.
