The Taos County Board of County Commissioners approved Resolution 2026-7 on Jan. 14 recognizing public-safety telecommunicators (dispatchers) as first responders and critical infrastructure.
Roberto Saragosa, the county 911 director, told commissioners dispatchers are routinely exposed to life-and-death information and deserve recognition and support. "Clerical doesn't even begin to describe the job," he said, noting long shifts and the emotional toll the role entails. He and others argued recognition is a step toward improved retirement choices and workforce retention.
Commissioners discussed legislative timing and the potential for state-level changes that would enable different retirement tiers for recognized first responders; the board moved to approve the resolution and carried it by voice vote.
