County OKs $350,000 AMI pressure-profile project to locate leaks and improve water operations

The Halifax County Board of Commissioners approved a capital project ordinance Aug. 3 to fund an AMI pressure-profile project for the county's water distribution system.
Public Utilities Director Chris Williams requested $350,000 to purchase meters and related software. "We are requesting, $350,000 to initiate and wind up completing a what we titled AMI pressure profile equipment," Williams told the board, explaining the selection of strategic meter locations and a vendor promotion that waives recurring software fees if a purchase threshold is met.
Williams said the proposed purchase includes 384 meters to qualify for the free software license and that the system will provide pressure-data trends to narrow leak searches and support long-term hydraulic modeling and fire-flow assessments. Commissioners discussed expected annual savings in software fees and the procurement exception that allows the county to purchase under the vendor promotion.
The board moved to adopt the project ordinance and associated capital transfer; the motion passed by voice vote.
